  • Goodwill City Ambassadors

    Friday, June 1, 2018

Join other OLLI members as Goodwill City Ambassadors to welcome fans of visiting teams to WVU home football games. Goodwill City Ambassadors are volunteers who are stationed around the outside of the stadium, Coliseum, and other areas two hours before the games to greet fans, answer questions, and provide directions as needed. Ambassadors do not get tickets to the games, but they do get parking passes and box lunches. The Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau supports the Ambassadors by providing their orange shirts, jackets, and hats. The first meeting for the 2018 season will be Tuesday, June 5th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dominion Post building at 1251 Earl L. Core Road in Sabraton. There will be another meeting on Wednesday, July 11th, at the same time and same place. For more information, please email Sara Bishop, the Goodwill City Ambassadors coordinator at goodwillcity@gmail.com.

Reading: I just finished The Noise of Time, by Julian Barnes, an awfully good British writer. In this short novel, he takes on the outline of the life of Dmitri Shostakovich, the Russian composer that managed, against all reason, to live through and survive the Stalin era. It’s written in a kind of brief snapshot style that is very effective in getting the feel of the era, the danger of the times and how artists managed to survive brutal dictators. This reading caused me to go into my study and retrieve all of the CDs I might have of Shostakovich music. I came out with about nine discs. My absolute favorites are the 3-disc set of the 24 preludes and fugues for piano, played by either Keith Jarrett or Tatiana Nikolayeva, one of the Russians that stayed friendly with DS for his whole career. If you don’t know these, either set is gorgeous. On this past Memorial Day week, I realized how grateful we must be as artists and thinkers, to live in a free country that can certainly be challenging—like now—but that always survives because the elements of freedom of speech, religion and enlightenment are bone-deep in all of us. I thank God for our system that was designed to protect our rights no matter who is in power.

  • Have you taken OLLI’s Basic Watercolors class?

    Friday, May 25, 2018

Basic Watercolors, taught by OLLI Honor Roll instructor Susan Witt, is a staple of our OLLI programming. Susan gives generously of her time and talents to teach budding and established artists the intricacies of painting with watercolors. Materials and supplies for the class can be costly and Susan often loans items to members of the class so they can explore their interest level without making big purchases. However, some of the items loaned have not been returned. If you have borrowed such items and have decided not to continue taking the class, and have not yet had the opportunity to return the items, please do so soon as possible. Items can be dropped off at the OLLI office or the Morgantown Art Association Gallery. Thank you!
